E39 Touring Custom Audio Upgrade
I'm planning on upgrading my 1997 E39 NONdsp sound system by replacing the factory amp with an Alpine MRP-F300 and the front door speakers with Alpine type Rs, while keeping the head unit stock. I'm also thinking about adding an amp/sub in the trunk (possible Alpine MRP-M500 and type R 12" sub).

I finally pulled the trigger and replaced the entire DVD Navigation system including head unit, amplifiers, subwoofers etc. The new Pioneer 2 Piece DMH-C2500NEX Android Auto/Carplay fits nicely in the E39 factory space with no modification of the heater core required.

The existing mid and top end from the standard BMW unit is surprisingly good, and would not be improved significantly by replacing with £600 speakers in the same position.

I have made some measurements and figured that the dimentions of the existing speaker and mounting is as follows: Diagonal mounting holes 140mm/~5.5" Perpendicular mounting holes 99mm/~3.89"
